Correcting the Villainess of the Academy - Chapter 27
Chapter 27
Friction (5)
“Oh, oh…?”
“Hey. Can’t you shut your mouth? I’ve been listening to you for a while now…”
It was the blonde girl who spoke up, standing in for a flustered Seoyeon.
She was the one who had taken the freshman’s oath, Jin Yeseo, if I recalled correctly.
Her eyes, as they looked at me, burned with the intensity of someone facing an opponent.
Next to her stood a muscular male student, watching me with apparent interest.
Opposite them, a girl with a ladylike demeanor and a kind-looking male student who seemed unsure of how to handle the sudden situation.
The male student’s face seemed oddly familiar.
Though I hadn’t noticed it from a distance yesterday, up close, his features definitely resembled Sehwa noona’s.
His last name was also Ryu. Noona had definitely mentioned she wanted me to get along with her younger brother…
“Where did this bastard come from, daring to…”
“Stop… just stop…!”
Sensing the growing tension, Seoyeon interjected, waving her hands to calm things down.
“Phew…”
At her intervention, the students reluctantly settled back into their seats. Seoyeon let out a light sigh, her expression turning slightly troubled.
“…Sorry, juniors. How about we end it here for today? I think I need to clear up some misunderstandings with Yu Jinhyun. By the way, Minha and I aren’t on bad terms. I don’t know why such rumors spread…”
“No, Senior! Who knows what might happen if you’re left alone with a guy like him…!”
“Hehe, I appreciate the concern. But there’s nothing to worry about. You can rest assured…”
Jin Yeseo’s protests were quickly quelled by Seoyeon’s light laughter, her tone brimming with confidence in her own abilities.
The gathering soon dispersed, and the students began to leave the salon. Now, only Seoyeon and I remained in the space.
Though she had mentioned clearing up misunderstandings, Seoyeon sat quietly for a long while.
Only after sipping from her now-cold teacup did she finally speak.

“…So, from the way you’re talking, it seems like you’ve made up your mind, haven’t you, junior?”
Her tone was still filled with a smiling kindness.
But her voice now pierced me like ice.
“…I don’t know what you mean by ‘made up my mind,’ but I don’t feel any desire to be close to you, Senior.”

“Is that so? That’s perfect. To be honest, I didn’t want to get along with trash like you either.”
The previously friendly atmosphere had entirely vanished. It was hard to believe this was the same person who had just been rebuking others for speaking poorly of my appearance.
“Calling someone you’ve just met ‘trash.’ It’s hard to believe those words came from Senior Baek Seoyeon. It’s almost as if you know me well…”
“Know you well? Of course, I do. You’re from the 66th Squadron, where all the trash dropouts gather. Did you think I wouldn’t know?”
She cut me off before I could finish.
“Our family’s information network reaches into the military. Do you think that’s all? I also know you had a private meeting with the principal before entering. How tough it must have been for you at such a young age…”
“…Don’t insult the captain and my sisters. They aren’t people who deserve such words…”
“Why not? They are trash. The captain is a delinquent despite being from a prestigious family, and those women have been wandering the outskirts for over a decade, having abandoned their family for that delinquent.”
“…”
“And Yu Jinhyun, I know all about you too. You joined the 66th Squadron most recently, but your cruelty rivals even that of your gangster captain. Among captured criminals, tales of a strange masked guy like you are widespread.”
The words she spat at me were full of venom.
“Not only do you mercilessly kill those who surrender, but you also lay hands on civilians, almost facing a military tribunal several times. And each time, Sa Jaehyuk supposedly saved you? It’s true, like captain, like subordinate…”
“…”
I had long known that the reputation of the 66th Squadron wasn’t good.
We weren’t regular soldiers; we mainly dealt with demons and guerrilla rebels. As a result, we often had to catch demons disguised as humans or rebels hiding among civilians.
Stories of such actions, combined with the captain’s peculiar personality, spread as twisted rumors. These rumors became reality, as the captain took no action to address them.
When I asked him why, he just waved his hand dismissively and went back to his tent.
According to my sisters, those rumors scared our enemies and saved us a lot of trouble, so the captain was quite satisfied with them.
They sighed deeply, saying it would be damaging if they ever decided to enter central politics, but they had long given up on that idea.
In my case, to be honest, they were somewhat right.

I could swear on my life that I never harmed an innocent person, but I did often let my rage take over when dealing with criminals and trash.
But even so, if someone had investigated the 66th Squadron and the captain more thoroughly, they could easily find the truth.

Or maybe they never intended to from the start.

Knowing my background and the meeting with the principal, they could roughly guess my stance.
There was no need to evaluate someone likely to stand against them objectively. No need to show their best side either.
Seoyeon had already shown enough by appearing to embrace me in front of other students. Whether I cooperated or resisted, it wouldn’t harm her.
At least, I could be somewhat relieved that Seoyeon only knew about my actions under my new name…

“…I don’t know what information you’ve heard, but I’ve never laid a hand on a civilian. Please don’t speak as if you know.”
“Well, of course you’d say that. I never expected an honest answer.”
Seoyeon shrugged lightly, looking amused.
“But our junior seems quicker-witted than I thought. At least you won’t starve.”
“…Was this your true personality all along?”
“Who knows? It’s not something you need to know.”
Her voice was again filled with calm.
“Why? Do you have a problem with that? Then why not share it with your friends? Maybe it’ll help relieve your worries? Though I doubt anyone would believe you.”
Suddenly, memories of our past conversations came rushing back.
-I was never in that village. I’ve always been cherished by the head of the family and never left the capital.
-Everyone who knows about my past is dead, and no one will believe you if you speak out. Of course not. Who would believe a country bumpkin like you?
“…Don’t worry. I have no intention of telling anyone.”
This conversation, just like that one from the past.

“…You’re not as stupid as I thought. But do you think Minha will accept you just because you show loyalty? She’s been looking pretty stressed lately. Anyway, good luck with that.”
Seoyeon smiled her characteristic bright smile at me.
“And one piece of advice from a senior: don’t do anything unnecessary. It’ll only shorten your life.”

Without responding, I left the lounge.

“Can you hear anything from inside?”
“No sound at all. It seems to be soundproof.”
“…If that bastard so much as touches a finger on my sister, I’ll kill him.”
Some students hadn’t left and were still in the hallway. Jin Yeseo’s stubbornness was the reason.
“How can someone’s personality be like that? Treating someone who invited you to help like that…”
“I’ve never seen anyone as obnoxious in my life. We need to teach him a lesson in a duel…”
“Ugh, why are you all like this? Seriously…”

Moon Yeowool and Guk Jaeryong agreed with Yeseo with disapproving faces, while Ryu Seunghun looked troubled as he tried to calm them down.
“Hmm, I thought he was better than expected. Isn’t it better than panting like a dog just because a senior called?”
“If Seoyeon unnie calls, you should bark gratefully like a dog. Seems like you don’t know what manners are, just like that rude guy.”
“This bitch is at it again…”
“Huh? The door, the door is opening…”
Woojin and Yeseo had been on the verge of a confrontation, but Yeowool, who had been watching the door, whispered urgently.
Out came the masked male student, his steps seemingly weak.
“Hey. Come here for a second. What the hell are you…”
Yeseo stepped in front of the male student, ready to pour out her anger. But the student ignored her as if she didn’t exist and walked past. The shocking behavior left Yeseo speechless, her mouth opening and closing silently.
“Pfft.”
Watching the scene, Woojin couldn’t hold back his laughter.
The masked student, about to leave, suddenly paused, then turned back toward them. He walked up to Seunghun and stopped.
“…Hmm?”
The masked student seemed to have something to say to Seunghun. After standing there for a while, he awkwardly extended his right hand with a stiff gesture. His voice was filled with awkwardness.
“Um… hello…”
“…?”
“Let’s… get along…?”
“Oh…? Oh. Yeah. Sure. Nice to meet you too…”
Seunghun, taken aback, shook the offered hand. Satisfied with the handshake, the masked student quickly walked away and disappeared from sight.
“…Is he really a weirdo?”
Yeowool muttered in disbelief as she watched the space the student had vacated.
